A webinar held at the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) on September 30 revealed that new spatial methods to conserve the critically endangered Philippine eagle being used for the first time, and also expected to benefit conservation management efforts for the vulnerable Mindanao bleeding heart pigeon, primarily in the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor.
The webinar about Philippine Eagle range metrics and spatial conservation planning was organized by the DENR-UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Project and spearheaded by the Davao City-based Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), in partnership with The Peregrine Fund based in Boise, Idaho, USA.
Also highlighting potential windfall benefits for Mindanao bleeding heart pigeon conservation, the webinar cited earlier technical reports on space-time home range estimates and resource selection for the Philippine national bird once dubbed as the monkey-eating eagle, which is one of the biggest raptors in the world.
